Student slouches. Physical gestures are missing or awkward and distracting.

Student sometimes stands up straight. Physical gestures are sometimes appropriate and not distracting.
Proficient

Student stands up straight and looks comfortable. Physical gestures are appropriate and show the speakers interest.
Excellent

Student stands up straight and looks comfortable and confident. Physical gestures demonstrate the speakers' energy and interest and guide the listener through the presentation.
Eye Contact

Poor

Student looks down and does not make eye contact with audience.
Adequate

Student sometimes makes eye contact with the audience.
Proficient

Student makes eye contact with the audience most of the time.
Excellent

Student makes eye contact and engages with the audience consistently.
Readiness

Poor

Student relies completely on cue cards and reads presentation to the audience. Student obviously does not have presentation memorized.

Student makes several references to cue cards but has obviously practiced the speech.

Student relies very little on cue cards and has obviously practiced speech numerous times.
Excellent

Student rarely references cue cards and is obviously very comfortable with the content of the speech.

Student does not speak clearly. Vocal variation, tone and inflection are not distinguishable. Student uses several vocal fillers or extra words such as umm, like, ahh, well, ok.

Student is audible and understandable most of the time. Student demonstrates some sense of inflection, tone and vocal variation. Student uses very few vocal fillers or extra words such as umm, like, ahh, well, ok.
Proficient

Student speaks clearly and audibly at all times in a natural voice. Inflection, tone and vocal variation are obvious. Student uses no vocal fillers or extra words such as umm, like, ahh, well, ok.
Excellent

Student speaks clearly and precisely in a nutural voice. Inflection, tone and vocal variation demonstrate enthusiasm and understanding of public speaking. Student uses no vocal fillers or extra words such as umm, like, ahh, well, ok.
Pace

Poor

Student speaks too quickly or too slowly.
Adequate

Student speaks at a generally consistent pace.
Proficient

Student speaks at a consistent pace throughout the presentation.
Excellent

Student speaks at a consistent pace but pausing or changes in speed are for emphasis, or to add emotion to the presentation.
Conclusion

Poor

Student does not deliver any closing remarks or ends abruptly.
Adequate

Student delivers a simple closing statement.
Proficient

Student prepares the audience for the ending and brings closure to the topic.
Excellent

Student delivers an engaging conclusion that brings closure to the topic. The main idea is reinforced and gives a sense of completion.
