Tone Quality
Excellent
Tone is consistently focused, clear, well supported with breath and centered throughout the range of the voice.
Good
Tone is mostly focused, clear, well supported with breath and centered throughout normal range. Extreme ranges sometimes cause tone to be less controlled but does not detract from the performance.
Fair
Tone is somewhat focused, clear, supported with breath and centered, but is a little uncontrolled in the normal range. Extremes ranges are usually uncontrolled, detracting a bit from overall performance.
Poor
The tone is often not focused, clear, no breath support and not centered regardless of the range, significantly detracting from the overall performance.
Pitch
Excellent
Virtually no errors. Pitch is very accurate.
Good
An occasional isolated error, but most of the time pitch is accurate and secure.
Fair
Some accurate pitches, but there are frequent and/or repeated errors.
Poor
Very few accurate or secure pitches.
Rhythm
Excellent
The beat is secure and the rhythms are accurate for the music being sung.
Good
The beat is secure and the rhythms are mostly accurate. There are a few duration errors, but these do not detract from the overall performance.
Fair
The beat is somewhat erratic. Some rhythms are accurate. Frequent or repeated duration errors occasionally detract from the overall performance.
Poor
The beat is usually erratic and rhythms are seldom accurate, detracting significantly from the overall performance.
Diction
Excellent
Student articulates clearly and the text of the music is understandable.
Good
Student articulates the words somewhat clearly and the text can be understood most of the time.
Fair
Student is sometimes articulating the words, but the text is often not discernable.
Poor
Student rarely articulates the words and the text is not discernable.
Expression and Style
Excellent
Performs with a creative nuance and style in response to the score and limited coaching. Follows melodic direction.
Good
Typically performs with nuance and style that is indicated in the score or which is suggested by instructor or peer.
Fair
Sometimes performs with nuance and style that is indicated in the score or which is suggested by instructor or peer.
Poor
Rarely demonstrated expression and style. Just sings the notes.
Stage Presence
Excellent
Appears extremely comfortable performing in front of the group. Always appears relaxed and enjoyable to watch with reactions appropriate to the scene. Keeps body positioned to share facial gestures and expressions with the audience.
Good
Appears somewhat comfortable performing in front of a group. Enjoyable to watch with reactions appropriate to the scene. Keeps body positioned to share facial gestures and expressions with the audience.
Fair
Often appears uncomfortable performing in front of the group. Clearly tense yet tries hard to continue. Forgets to keep body positioned to share facial gestures and expressions with the audience.
Poor
Extremely uncomfortable performing in front of the group. Shares few or no facial gestures and expression with the audience (head down, turns away, giggles, etc.)
Microphone Handling
Excellent
Student is comfortable holding the mic as a natural extension of the body. Microphone must be horizontal and 2 fingers from the mouth.
Good
Student is somewhat comfortable holding the microphone but it does not appear natural.
Fair
Student is visually uncomfortable holding the microphone and is inhibiting body movement and vocal sound.
Poor
Student's use of the microphone is a distraction and is heavily impacting the quality of sound.
