4 - Advanced

You have connected the theme to other writers, or in some way talked about how this theme has been used previously in other writing.
Level 3 - proficient

You have identified a key theme from this entire literary work in a clear way, made a clear statement, your theme statement could be used by others when examining other literary works.
2 = basic

You have identified a possible topic that could be the correct theme, but you have not made a clear statement, ex. "the value of friendship" - but what is the author saying about the value of friendship
AND/OR - the theme you tried to identify is based on just one section, part, or scene in the story, not the entire story
1 = minimal

You have identified a possible theme. However the theme doesn't match the literary work.

Evidence/Support

4 - Advanced

-the evidence you give are specific events (things people said & did) throughout the whole literary work, and these events clearly relate to the theme you identified
- the support you give goes beyond the characters, you've included some of the other elements of literature as support (mood, tone, setting, plot structure)

- you've mentioned at least 3 specific events (things people said and did) from the whole literary work that connect to the theme you identified AND you explained the details of the event
ex. what the main character is angry about, what they said and did, and to whom, and why
2 = basic

- You've mentioned 1 - 2 specific events as evidence
- AND/OR You've given vague & general support, ex. the main character was angry - this is too vague, explain what they were angry about, what they said and did, and to whom, and why, and how this supports the theme.
- AND/OR your support came from just one part of the literary work, you haven't shown how the theme is throughout the whole piece.
1 = minimal

You have identified evidence, but it is not supported by the literary work.
