Vocabulary Rubric - Frayer Model 
When asked to complete a Frayer Model for a target word that was presented in a story or text the students will: write the word, rate their understanding of the word on a scale of 1-4, give the definition or definitions for the word, provide at least one synonym, illustrate the meaning with a picture, write a complete sentence using the word with good context clues to support meaning.

The word is not used correctly.

The sentence is not complete.
OR
The target word is not used in the sentence.
Vocabulary Word

1 - I don't know the word.
2 - Heard it but don't know what it means.<BR>
3 - I know what it means but I couldn't explain it to someone else.<BR>
4 - I know it well enough to teach it to someone else.

Proficient

The word is spelled correctly and prominently displayed on the Frayer Model. The word is rated 1-4.
Basic

The word is spelled incorrectly on the Frayer Model, but is recognizable.
You did not rate the word.
Beginning

The word is missing.
Definitions

Proficient

The definition of the word is clear and correct. It is stated in terms that the student understands and does not use the word itself in the definition. It is also written in the students' own words.
Basic

The definition is incomplete.
Or
The definition does not clearly explain the meaning of the word and show the student's understanding of the word.
Or
The definition is not written in the students' own words.
Beginning

The definition is not correct or is missing.
Illustration/Symbol

Proficient

The picture focuses on a simple object or event that creates a visual image of the meaning. The context of the picture connects to the word.
Basic

There is a picture, but it doesn't provide the clear meaning of the target word.
Beginning

There is no picture or the picture does not illustrate the meaning of the target word.
Example or Non-Example

Proficient

Demonstrates knowledge of the word by listing examples or non-examples to make additional connections.
OR
Words or phrases that describe the word are used to explain what the word makes you think of.
Ex: WINTER - season, cold, snow,December-February...etc.
Basic

Example or non-example listed does not match the meaning of the word.
Beginning

No examples/non-examples or context connections are given.
Neatness/Grammar/Spelling

Proficient

The Frayer Model is presented with neat handwriting and organized according to instructions given. Careful attention has been given to spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.
Basic

The student's work is neat but there are several mistakes in spelling, punctuation, or sentence structure.
OR
The student's work is messy but uses correct spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.
Beginning

The Frayer Model does not meet expectations of being neat, legible, and does not demonstrate grade level language skills.
