Students are asked to write a one to two page review or critique of a performance/visual piece of art. It should be clear what type of show/artwork was performed/created and the quality of the performance/artwork.

The critique was poorly organized and showed little thought or insight. Sentences were incomplete and there were many grammatical errors. Very few opinions or descriptions of the performance/artwork were given. No terminology, explanations or facts were given for the opinions that were there.

The critique showed some thought, however it was poorly organized and had a lot of grammatical errors in it. Opinions and descriptions of the performance/artwork were given, but without support of terminology, or explanations.

The critique was well thought out and organized, however there were some grammatical errors in the composition. Opinions and descriptions of the performance/artwork were well done for the most part, and were explained with some terminology and facts.
Excellent

The critique was well thought out, organized and professionally written. Opinions and descriptions of the performance/artwork were tactfully written, and explained with terminology and facts.

Fair

Student shows some evidence of at least two elements and two principles of the arts.

Student shows apparent evidence of at least four elements and four principles of the arts.

Student shows strong evidence of at least six out of seven elements and principles of the arts.

Poor

Knows little about the performance/artwork;neither observes or describes the main elements of the performance/artwork nor sees the relationship to its overall design or structure.
Fair

Knows several forms of one of the performances/artwork; knows some relevant information but neither observes and describes the main elements of the work nor sees their relationship to its overall design or structure.
Good

Is familiar with one of the arts and articulates an aesthetic response to artistic works using appropriate concepts and relevant information; observes and describes the main elements of the work and their relationship to its overall design or structure.
Excellent

Knows the major forms of one of the arts and articulates an understanding of the medium’s aesthetic qualities using appropriate concepts and relevant information; carefully observes and accurately describes the elements of the work and their relationship to its overall design or structure; articulates the understanding of aesthetic uses of its medium.
