Summary / Response Rubric 
Students will write a summary / personal response of their story. Writing will be one long paragraph (10 sentences), and will include the title, author's name, main plot events (including main setting, conflict, and resolution) characters, and other information from the story. Paragraph will be indented properly, will have a topic sentence, and will have accurate and effective sentence structure.

Paragraphs are indented, sentences are complete, and appropriate vocabulary is used. It must be two paragraphs long with a total length of 10 sentences.

Approaching Standard

The summary covers most of the necessary content in detail. It is 2 paragraphs but less than 10 sentences.

The summary does not cover all of the necessary material. It is 1 paragraph and less than 10 sentences.
Organization of Summary

The summary is easy to understand. It explains the story's main character, setting, conflict, the main events making up the plot, and the resolution.

Meeting Standard

The summary includes a title and topic sentence.
Transitions are used to move reader through the plot. The main events of the story are clearly explained and give a clear understanding of the plot.
Approaching Standard

The summary follows somewhat of a logical path. It jumps around a little bit, but the plot and main events of the story are included.
Below standard

The summary is hard to follow and understand. It doesn't clearly explain the plot or main events.
Accuracy of Summary

Summary is clearly written with regard to grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

The summary has a few noticeable errors in grammar, punctuation, or spelling, but is still understandable.

Summary explains your opinion and ideas of the story. Textual evidence for your thoughts are also included.

The response is a clear explanation of your personal ideas about the story.
Approaching Standard

The response is a good explanation of your personal ideas about the story. It lacks detail and is a little unclear.
Below standard

The response is not an explanation of your personal ideas about the story. There are no details.
