Topic Support

Excellent

The prompt chosen was supported with with a clear Thesis. I support my thesis with examples or parallels with clear documentation. I write in a way that grabs my attention. It is clear that I have understood The Crucible and can write creatively about it.
Good

The thesis is there and is strong. I support the topic of my prompt with examples or parallels but they are not always supported by research (page numbers/quotes/clear examples from book or outside research).
Fair

This essay needs more research. It could be that I didn't understand The Crucible well enough to find examples and parallels. I got lost in the middle of my essay and didn't quite know how to finish.
Poor

The writing is not clearly focused around a central main point. I just wrote sentences to fill up the space on the paper.
Mechanical Flow

Excellent

I have a strong lead that grabs readers. I use transitional phrases and words that move the essay smoothly. I have a clear introduction, body and conclusion with well structured topic sentences. All supports the thesis.
Good

My structure is clear. I have a topic sentence, but it is mildly supported. I have some transitional words and phrasing, but could have used them more effectively. My essay concluded appropriately but not as strong as my opening. I need more support for my topic or thesis. I could have a better paper with stonger leads that grab the reader.
Fair

I have no strong lead. The topic/thesis is there --vaguely. I don't have body paragraphs or conclusion that tie in with the topic. I have not used transitional words or phrasing.
Poor

I did not put any thought into writing around a thesis statement. I just wanted to get it over and done so I could talk with my friends instead of improve my mind.
Sentence Fluency/Grammar

Excellent

My sentences flow with creativity. There are no errors in punctuation, or sentence structure. I have shown enthusiasm with my thoughts and used creative sentence structuring throughout.
Good

My sentence writing is good. It shows potential. It's clear I believe in what I'm writing but use only some variety in sentence structure. Some puctuation errors and mechanical errors with sentences. But overall I feel it is good.
Fair

My sentences are choppy and fragmented. I have no variety in sentence writing. I need to take more time to edit and revise, making sure my reader will understand my essay.
Poor

I do not use sentences, punctuation or standard grammar or spelling when I write. I am not going to have to write any while working as a greeter at the big box store anyway.
Timely

Excellent

On time
Good

One day late
Fair

Two days late
Poor

More than two days late
