Future Earth Globe Project
Globe to Map Project
Students will individually make a 3dimentional globe that they created by paper mache or printed template. Their globe will represent a future Earth scenario based on what the student has learned during the Earth Systems and Cycles unit. They will also design a presentation tri-fold board detailing how the systems and cycles have changed and/or have altered Earth in their scenario. They will then present their results to faculty and parents at a final consortium.

Knowledge and Understanding
Unsatisfactory
Does not show a basic understanding of Earth Systems and Cycles or how they interact on a dynamic planet. No reference features included.
Partially Proficient
Shows a basic understanding of Earth Systems and Cycles and some knowledge of dynamic interaction. Identifies some of the following on the globe:
1. Equator
2. Prime Meridian
3. International Date Line
Proficient
Knowledge and understanding of subject matter is clear. Shows clear interaction of dynamic systems. Identify the following on the globe and the map:
1. Equator
2. Prime Meridian
3. International Date Line
4. Compass Rose (on Map only)
Advanced
Student shows in-depth knowledge of the subject matter and approaches the project in a creative/novel manner. Identify the following on the globe and the map:
1. Equator
2. Prime Meridian
3. International Date Line
4. Compass Rose (on Map only)
in a creative/original fashion. Connections are easy to follow.
Knowledge and Understanding
Unsatisfactory
Presentation does not display understanding of the subject matter. May not include all of the systems covered (Atmosphere, Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere) or their interaction. All components are not present (Globe, presentation board, reference map).
Partially Proficient
Presentation displays understanding of subject matter. All items and systems are present, but do not follow a logical progression of change given their parameters (not enough time has passed to allow their changes, too much time has passed without fully explaining the processes of change).
Proficient
Presentation displays understanding of the subject matter. All items and systems present and follow a logical pattern.
Advanced
Presentation displays understanding of the subject matter. Information gives comparison of systems and cycles and shows the student fully understands how these systems and cycles interact on a dynamic planet to alter these systems. Creative hypotheses may be introduced or presented in a novel manner.
Research
Unsatisfactory
Student does not include sufficient references for body of work. Either work is improperly cited or not enough outside references included for entire body of work (at least 2)
Partially Proficient
Student provides citations for all research, but does not show in-depth outside research (2-4 references)
Proficient
Student properly cites a sufficient number of outside sources for body of work (5 sources).
Advanced
Student displays exceptional outside research that is properly cited and shows an in-depth understanding of research methods and mastery of skills (more than 5 scholar sources)
Critical Thinking
Unsatisfactory
Does not provide information or provides minimal information on the systems and cycles discussed in the unit.
Partially Proficient
Identification and examples of some of the systems and cycles discussed (atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, heat transfer/exchange, water cycle, nitrogen cycle, rock cycle, Wilson cycle)
Proficient
Identify and provide examples of each of the systems and cycles discussed in this unit.
Advanced
Identification and examples of each of the systems and cycles discussed and provides information on additional cycles not covered in class.
Craftsmanship - Globe
Unsatisfactory
Globe is not well-made within student's capabilities and chosen media. Student does not display an understanding of how globes are made or no effort was made to maintain craftsmanship.
Partially Proficient
Globe is sufficiently constructed within student's abilities and chosen media. Displays basic knowledge of globe construction and details.
Proficient
Globe is well constructed and shows understanding of details that should be included on globes.
Advanced
Globe is near-perfectly constructed within the confines of the chosen media, or constructed in a novel/creative way above and beyond the scope of the project. *Professionally created globes or globes that have obviously not been completed by hand, by the student will not be eligible for an award. Boards and globes must be the work of the student. If a parent helps, they may not help with more than 25% of the project and must be cited as a co-creator.
Craftsmanship - Presentation Board
Unsatisfactory
Presentation board is sloppily constructed, illegible, or missing key features (breakdown of systems/cycles, reference map) or key features cannot be understood.
Partially Proficient
Presentation board is adequately constructed and mostly legible. Key features are included, but may not be well-developed or may not show care of work.
Proficient
Presentation board is well-constructed, neat, and legible. All features are present, neat, and presented with care.
Advanced
Presentation board is impeccable and creative. All features are presented in a creative and visually dynamic way that draws viewers in. *Professionally created boards or boards that have obviously not been completed by hand, by the student will not be eligible for an award. Boards and globes must be the work of the student. If a parent helps, they may not help with more than 25% of the project and must be cited as a co-creator.
presentation
Unsatisfactory
Student does not show an understanding of their project, or does not show a willingness to participate in the presentation.
Partially Proficient
Student shows an understanding of their project, but does not appear prepared for the presentation.
Proficient
Student shows an understanding of their project and any fumbles during the presentation are due to nerves rather than not being prepared.
Advanced
Student shows in-depth understanding of their project and presentation is without more than a couple mistakes due to nerves. Student appears well-rehearsed and their presentation is interesting.
