5th Grade Independent Reading Logs 
My 5th grade students maintain reading logs for the books they are reading independently. Students are given freedom in choosing topics for their writing, so long as they are completing an entry after each independent reading session. They take their reading logs home on a daily basis to review with their parents and get them signed. I collect reading logs throughout the week (each student has a designated day that their log is to be turned in) and provide feedback.

Journal entries show reflective thinking about the story elements. The student demonstrates knowledge of characters, setting, plot, main idea, and problem/solution for each fictional book read. (example: the student names a character and states something they know about the character that is not explicitly stated in the text, such as the character's personality or feelings).
Knowledge of reading strategies

Journal entries do not demonstrate any use of effective reading strategies (inferences, predictions, sequencing, etc...).

Journal entries demonstrate that the student is making some use of effective reading strategies (inferences, predictions, sequencing, etc...) but thoughts are not complete.

Journal entries demonstrate that the student is making use of effective reading strategies (inferences, predictions, sequencing, etc...) in complete thoughts.
