Rubric to assess students' ability to construct a critical essay that uses textual evidence to defend an argument. This rubric is based on a 50 point assessment.

This rubric is designed so that individual pieces of the essay can be graded seperately. Essays or individual categories that are blank, off-topic, or illegible will receieve a 0 score.

The writing aims to persuade by arguing one side of an issue.

For this project, you will take on the role of a lawyer either defending or prosecuting a character in OMaM for responsibility in the death of Lennie Smalls. Using your knowledge of the novel, the three types of appeal (ethos, pathos, and logos), and the cultural context of the Great Depression, compose and deliver the closing argument of that trial. Your product must incorporate roots/found vocabulary and be either recorded on video, recorded on audio, or delivered live.

This rubric will assess reading comprehension through the use of a graphic organizer

This rubric will be used to evaluate how a student works and participates during activities (work, class, meeting, assembly, etc.). I have purposely weighted each criteria this way as I believe this rubric will be fairer to the lower level students that are trying to participate rather than those that are largely unresponsive in class - Fair = 3 and Poor = 1

Annotation is the foundation of thoughtful and active reading.

This rubric will evaluate a brochure created by the student that contains an assigned literary element.

Student is to create a power point presentation of 5 - 10 slides (including introductory and concluding page) that teaches about assigned topic. Slides are to include accurate information and pictures. Student must present information & power point presentation to the class. Information must be in depth.

This rubric would be used for students to assess themselves and peers participation in a discussion group.
