ABC's of Black History

To commemorate Native American Heritage Month (November), students will engage in a long-term project on Native Americans who lived in Ohio. Students will choose a Native American tribe to research. The students will then decide on three topics that they would like to investigate. Students will use note cards to record and organize their information. Students need visual aids (a minimum of three) to accompany their oral presentations.

In order for the students to have a better understanding and knowledge of the contributions of African Americans, they will be creating a Black History Month ABC book. The students will select a famous African American for each letter of the alphabet and complete research in order to explain why that person is important. Each page of the book should include at least three important facts and one picture.

Journal entries MUST be complete and organized. If you are absent, write the word "absent" across the page for the date you missed. You will need to make-up that entry with a partner on your own time. If your journal is missing/late 2 pts. (see scoring) will be deducted for each missing day. No exceptions. You will still need to complete your journal on a sheet of paper and staple it into journal. If you lose your journal, you are responsible for replacing it.

Students write and essay about their animal's habitat information and create a box diorama of the animal in it's natural habitat.

Students create a campaign poster, speech, slogan and logo for their race to be President of Woodland Academy.

Your first project is to create a Homework Survival Kit. This kit is to contain certain materials that will be used on a daily basis to complete your homework assignments for all subjects. You should keep this kit in a safe place, so that you can easily find it when you are working on homework. The items in the kit are to be kept in the box. They are not to be brought or used in the classroom

Students will research a historical figure and prepare a visual presentation on said figure.

For Black History Month, students are to research and write a 2-3 page biography on important historical figure. These biographies include information on the person's early life, what contributions they made to society, 2-3 interesting or unique facts about the person, and the students own reflections about the person and their contributions and what they have learned. In addition to a 2-3 page paper, the students are required to make something that represents their person. The students will be presenting their person and object to the class. They will have to speak to the class about their person in a 2-3 minutes presentation. Flash cards may be used during presentation. The students are not expected to read their two to three page papers word for word.

Create a collection of 100 items and display them in a unique and creative way. Be prepared to present it to the class.

Checklist for student's use during a cooperative PBL lesson.

Specific Expectation: Students will create sketch maps to show the relative positions of places; use shading/colour to indicate variations in characteristics; construct and read a wide variety of maps for specific purposes; use appropriate vocabulary to describe their inquiries/observations.

The Maps unit will be formally assessed in three different parts: MAPPING OUR SCHOOL-AN ADVENTURE, MAP OF CLASSROOM, and MAP TEST. In MAP OF CLASSROOM students should include the following: Map Key with symbols defined and used (counts as 2 items), compass rose, overhead view, and grid system.

Studends will be graded on their journal entries using this rubric.

Make a poster using magazine photos to categorize living and non-living items.
