In T. H. White’s The Sword in the Stone, Merlyn transforms the Wart into 5 different animals. During each of those adventures, a wiser, more knowledgeable member of the same species accompanies Wart. While magically transformed, Wart learns lessons that will eventually help him to become a fair and just king. Students choose an alternate animal and use imagination and White's adventures as models to write a story about an additional encounter the Wart might have had during his education.

Students will draw on a text to support assertions about change and character traits. Quotes and parenthetical citations are NOT required.

The Giver One-Pager

In the first person, rewriting a pivotal scene from the perspective of a character other than the protagonist

Summer Reading One-Pager

Helena several times speaks of wanting to be like Hermia. Write a well-developed paragraph in which you tell about someone (real) who you would like to be more like. Describe this person, and tell why you admire him or her and how you might go about working to develop similar characteristics.

This is a rubric for a pantoum poem.

Take a stance on a chosen literary element. The essay should contain fully developed paragraphs. The paper must include proper MLA parenthetical citations.

Students write a narrative that demonstrates their understanding of the stages of plot and the literary elements of the short story.

Class Discussion/Harkness Rubric

Students will create a magazine advertisement for the youth pill described in Maggie Nadler's short story, "The Pill."

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - After reading about the traits that Francie inherits from the Rommley & Nolan sides of her family - and the characteristics that are solely her own - students craft an essay identifying 2 of their own inherited traits, as well as one characteristic that applies uniquely to them.

21 Balloons Project

Students will use and analyze quotes in support of assertions about character traits.

Students will create slides, an audiology flyer or brochure, etc. on a related topic of their choosing. Topics may include: sign language, causes of hearing loss in youth or the elderly, congenital conditions, preventative measures, or other non-verbal forms of communication and their origins - for example, signals used in baseball or SCUBA diving.

The student will define and provide an appropriate visual example of a specific vocabulary word or literary term/device.
