My Teaching Philosophy

Philosophy of Teaching and Learning

The literature says that "Good teachers demonstrate an ability to transform and extend knowledge, rather than merely transmitting it; they draw on their knowledge of the subject, their knowledge of their learners, and their general pedagogical knowledge to transform the concepts of the discipline into terms that are understandable to their students. In other words, they display their pedagogical content knowledge. ... Good teachers show respect for their students; they are interested in both their professional and their personal growth, encourage their independence, and sustain high expectations of them.

I completely agree with this summation and used this as basis for my teaching philosophy. It is very important to understand the role of teacher in the life of a student. As a teacher I think I will play an important role in shaping students career. What makes teaching more important for my area of teaching (Mathematics & Information Technology) is the role that these students will play in the real outside world. As a Mathematics teacher I always try to connect mathematics to real world, but some of the young students tend to go away from Mathematics because they think Maths is not related to real life, but infact additions and subtractions starts at the time of our birth. Maths is everywhere in households, in outside world even in sports.

A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. – Henry Brooks Adams

As a teacher I should be able to inspire students in the pursuit of knowledge while recognizing that individual situations and motivations. I always try different activities on same topic to help students better understand the concept and I also try to motivate them by recognizing their achievements and rewarding them according to their interests.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. – Chinese proverb

As a teacher I will be mainly concentrating on understanding the needs of students and assessing their prior knowledge and then using interactive teaching methods to expand and build on that. As a teacher my first goal is to assess students prior knowledge and then build that knowledge so that students completely understand the next level on learniing.
