Reflections Essay for EXL
Since I was a little girl I knew that I wanted to go to college and become a great person who could help all types of people. I wanted to become a nurse because I knew I could accomplish all of the goals I had set for myself and in the mean time, help so many people from all different nationalities, race, and gender. I know that this is God’s calling on my life and I want to do my very best to make Him proud.
As a nursing student at Middle Tennessee State University, I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge concerning my field. I have worked hard in the classroom as well as in a variety of clinical settings. I have been given the opportunity to work with hospitals such as Middle Tennessee Medical Center, University Medical Center, Saint Thomas Hospital, and Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, just to mention a few. I have also had the opportunity to work with several different outpatient facilities and attend a variety of support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, breast cancer support, and Crohns and Colitis support groups. I have also had the opportunity to volunteer at different agencies and on campus events. Through all of this experience, I have learned how to be compassionate to the many different needs of my patients. I have also gained great knowledge on how to communicate at a professional level with my colleagues.
It is important as a nurse to embrace a sense of holism. Throughout my clinical observations, I have learned to take care of the people I encounter in a holistic manner. I love the thought of my professional title as a nurse because we have such a great reputation of being loving, compassionate, and caring people. My journey through nursing school, and the many areas I have had a chance to work and volunteer in, has allowed me the opportunity to discover my passion for oncology patients. My experiences have given me the skills I need to take the best care of the patients I will serve on a daily basis.
The EXL program is a wonderful opportunity to show our community the skills we have developed throughout our educational careers. Much knowledge, skill, and care is generated through programs like excel. EXL takes what students have learned in the classroom and encourages them to put these skills into action within the community.  This is a vital part of being a successful and committed member of the community.  Another great aspect of EXL is the opportunity given to create an e-Portfolio. By creating the webpage, students can share his or her experiences with friends, family, and more importantly future employers.
The EXL program can benefit so many students from all different majors. It is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in. I would highly recommend this program to other students.
