The team put on a excellent effort in finishing the first day of the Power League 3-0, winning all three matches in 2 straight games.  In the opener, the team downed the top-ranked Pittsburgh Renaissance Black team 25-14 and 21, and followed that up with a 25-15 and 25-16 victory against Premier #1 and a 25-17 and 25-18 win against Team Energetics.  Highlights of the day included Brit's "Dome Ball", Jade/Molly's timely blocks, Erin's 20 kills, Brit and Jenna's 13 kills apiece, Jade's 59 assists, Corrin's outstanding passing, Jessi's 5 aces, Lauren's big play against Energetics from right back to middle front,  Marla's cookies, Vertrence backing down from the "Tri-pod Troll" and of course, the humor in the Pewmobile.  We will be in action again at Premier, Sunday February 10th for the second day of the Power League.  Let's keep this headed in the right direction, all year!

Premier Volleyball Academy

We completed day two of the Power League with a 5-0 record raising our overall record to 9-0 in match play and 18-0 in sets.  We are currently in first place in the Power League with five matches to go next week.  While uncertainty reigned for the past two weeks due to injuries to Brit and Dakota, those fears were quickly put to rest when they both showed up and played showing no ill effects.  This was a major boost, as we played some very good teams this past weekend.  On the day, the team opened by downing Blackswamp 25-6 and 25-10 to complete the cross-over match from the first week.  Then, in the top Gold pool, we continued to progress nicely defeating A.C.E. 25-8 and 25-15, Maverick 25-15 and 25-14, Northshore 25-9 and 25-16, and Team Atlantis 25-15 and 25-14.  From a statistical standpoint, the girls accumulated the following numbers:  Serving Percentage--94%, Hitting Percentage--.455, both of which are off the charts.  One thing was obvious:  each and every player had a major impact on each and every victory.   And, each one seemed to rise to the occasion when needed.  This is what makes our team so special, someone is always there to pick us up.  The only negative statistic is probably the fact that we had some of the best desert mothers in my coaching history, AND GRANDMOTHERS, which usually means big-time deserts, but I still probably lost a couple of pounds, hmmm.....  Once again, great job girls!  Now, our job is to focus/concentrate on getting better each and every day.

The team overcame a sluggish start to wrap up first place in the OVR Power League on March 2nd.  After dropping a tight 3-set match to CVA, the kids ran off, okay they "semi-ran" off 4 straight victories to finish with a record of 12-1.  First, we were once again pushed to the limit by Far Out of Michigan, but we held on to win in three.  Next up was a familiar foe in Premier, a team we defeated very soundly on day one.  We started to show signs of life by putting them away 25-16 in game one, and then we managed to hold on for a 25-21 victory in game 2.  The two toughest opponents of the day were still waiting in the wings, as we had to play TVC 16-1 and Legacy, another Michigan team.  After playing pretty well against TVC in game one and winning 25-17, the kids found a way to win game 2 by a score of 25-22.  Lastly, we were faced with a tall and athletic Legacy team.  We had to win this match to claim the top spot in the tournament.  In game one, we clicked on all cylinders downing them 25-16 and followed that up with a "sporatic" performance in game 2.  Leading game 2 by a score of 23-15, it appeared that the championship was in the bag, however little did we know that the only thing in a bag would be our coaching staffs' and parents' heads as they watched our team squander that huge lead down to 24-23.  But, our kids came up with the big play when we needed it the most.  A perfect pass, a perfect set, and a monstrous swing from Jenna, who apparently paced herself all day saving up loads of energy, for this one play vaulted us into first place and off to a terrific start to the season.  Individually, Molly should be commended for passing and serving like a machine all day--well done!  All of the players had spurts of greatness, as did our team, we apparently just didn't want to all "show off" at once.  The team is next in action at Hiram College in an OVR National Challenge March 8-9.

Hoosier Mid-East Qualifier

Indianapolis, IN

In our first pool, we finished 2-1 to advance to the Gold Division.  We got off to a sluggish start and had to go into 3 games to defeat Southwest Ilinois 16-1.  We played a bit better in our next match downing The Edge from Chicago in 2 straight to improve to 2-0.  Our last pool match was for first place on our net.  We started off in a very positive way, leading early, but several critical errors led to our demise.  Finishing as the second place team on Friday put us in an extremely difficult pool on Saturday.  We were matched up against the #3, #14, and #31 teams in the nation.  We were self-destructive in our first game losing to Sunshine California, the top seed in the entire tournament and ranked #3 nationally, 14-25, but bounced back to push them to the limit losing 22-25.  Our next opponent, last year's National Division National Champion, Tampa Bay, Florida featured one of the top outside hitters in the country.  We led the first game all the way to 20, sometimes by 6 points.  However, they came out on top in the end beating us in two straight.  Our last opponent was Santa Monica Beach Club.  They showed why they were ranked #31 in the nation, putting us away in 3 games.  Just when people thought all was lost, Brit, Corrin, Dakota, Jessi, and Molly put the day behind them and entertained the rest of us in a way that I have never seen in my lifetime!  Their soon-to-be-released video was absolutely awesome.  That seemed to loosen/cheer everyone up, especially when they "taught" their other teammates the routine--keeping in mind that the words "taught" and "routine" are relative.  On Sunday, we were playing for 7th place, which is outstanding considering the competition and the fact that no other OVR team was better than 15th.  We opened slowly against nationally-ranked Minnesota Select dropping game 1 by a score of 22-25.  Then, the skies opened, the stars aligned, and all was right with the world--"A Christmas Story" quote--and we came to life.  We won game one 25-14 and game three 15-9, playing very well.  Our second match was against an excellent Dallas Premier team.  They had beaten some very good teams the first two days, but we came to play.  We dominated game one 25-14 and led game two 20-8, before hanging on to win 25-22.  In the Silver Championship for 7th place, we faced a familiar foe, Santa Monica Beach Club.  The kids seemed to be focused on paying them back for beating us the day before.  The jumped on us in game one and won 19-25.  Games two and three were a different story.  We drilled them in game two 25-16 and controlled game three to win 15-11.  The last day, and our 7th place finish, helped solidify our OVR ranking and seed for the upcoming National Challenge.  It was a great ending to a long/tough weekend.  It was the first time our kids have ever played in a big-time match, let alone 9 big-time matches.  They're learning what it means to be under pressure where every play is majorily important.  We're next in action in Maumee in the National Challenge March 29-30.

Premier Volleyball Academy

Being seeded in the National Challenge at Premier Volleyball Academy was a good sign for our team Saturday.  The pooling of teams certainly worked to our advantage, or so we thought.  We swept through our Saturday pool in pretty dominating fashion beating TVC 16-Mizuno 25-15 and 25-18.  Following our first match, we still played with a bit of inconsistency, however we did defeat Cincy VBC 25-20 and 25-13 and finally put it all together in a victory over Blackswamp 25-17 and 25-12.  We completed our Saturday pool matches by playing Mintonette 16's, which was our first match of our second round pools.  We played extremely well in winning 25-12 and 25-14.  It was by far our best effort of the day.  Sunday saw us matched up against Kaepa Borderline Attack and Northshore. The kids began to perform to their ability in defeating Attack 25-13 and 25-12 and looking "like a contender" in downing Northshore 25-15 and 25-13.  Finishing our second pool #1 put us #1 in the Gold playoff bracket.  We faced Eastside Cleveland Juniors in the quarterfinals.  After building a seemingly insurmountable lead of 23-12, we found a way to hold off two game points to win 26-24.  We had to make a few defensive gems to survive, but game two saw our team, not some bunch of clones, return to the court and we once again showed our strength winning 25-13.  The semi-finals brought a familiar foe in A.C.E.  They finished second in their second, thus pitting them against us earlier than we anticipated.  Game one saw our kids play very well and win going away 25-15.  Game two was a back and forth battle, largely due to our miscues, but we held on to win 25-23.  The only obstacle standing between us and the championship was another highly-ranked and excellent team--CVC Black.  They proved to be more than a formidable foe.  After several outstanding defensive plays, we pulled out game one 25-23.  The second game was not as close as the score would indicate.  Although the final tally was 25-20, we had a fairly comfortable lead the entire game.  On the weekend, we were 9-0 in matches and 18-0 in games.  This was the best our team has played in two years, especially on the defensive side of things.  It was awesome to see our kids find a way to win and show a "refuse to lose attitude" when things got tough.  Next up:  The OVR National Bid Qualifier.
