The National Council of Negro Women was founded in 1935 by the great Mary McLeod Bethune. It was her vision to formulate an organization whose mission is to lead, develop, and advocate for women of African descent as they support their families and communities. The council originally was comprised of 28 national women leaders to create an "organization of organizations." When she founded this organization Ms.McLeod was working as the Advisor of Minority Affairs to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's cabinet, and was unscathed by the volumes of un-harnessed woman power. With over 4 million members, 39 affiliates, and 240 sections, it is our focus to keep the focus of this organization alive by working toward a unity of purpose and a unity of action.
