About Us

Temper Facts

Temper is an annual publication funded by the UCSD Associated Students Organization. The purpose of our journal is to promote UCSD undergraduate student art, literature and discourse. Every year during the academic quarters of fall and winter we invite students to submit their creative endeavors to undergo our selection process and hopefully be published in our annual issue that is released at the end of spring quarter.

We do not know the exact origins of our publication, but believe that Temper has been in existence at UCSD for over 20 years. We have gathered, from word of mouth, that in the beginning the publication was actually named The Birdcage Gazette.

In the last few years Temper has undergone some rather interesting changes. The 2000 issue of Temper contained a section of literary work from local San Diego high school students.

In the 2001 issue we added our first photography and artwork section. Our 2002 issue featured the journal's first colored cover.

In the fall of 2005 we held our first annual reading and exhibition of the stories, poems and artwork from the 2005 edition.  It was a great success and a tradition we hope to continue.

For the 2007 edition and all that follow it, we are hoping to expand the music section. Links to the artists' websites and their short Bio's will be posted on the website.

Temper is currently run by a collaboration of undergraduate students who volunteer their time to publicize the journal, read and select student submissions, design the layout and disseminate the journal once printed. Our staff is quite a mix; we have art and literature majors as well as biology and computer science majors. This helps to guarantee that the pieces that we select will be of interest to a wide variety of students at UCSD.

Our staff can always use extra help so please email us, at temper@ucsd.edu , if you have an interest in participating in the creation of our upcoming issue.
