How can I get started the open source community?

I'm currently a college student who's thinking about a career in programming. I've been been giving lots of thought recently to contributing to some open source project(s) but I don't really know how to get my foot in the door.
I'm slightly worried about the level of programmer I need to be. I don't consider myself an expert programmer (or even really a remarkable one) but I'd like to learn. I was hoping I could use this as an opportunity to get some real world experience and maybe learn a thing or two.
If someone could tell me how to get started or just point me in the right direction that would be awesome.
