Mathematical Explanation	Novice The student does not show his/her understanding, or the student incorrectly shows understanding with words, pictures, symbols, or numbers.	Emerging The student is able to correctly show his/her mathematical understanding using one of the following: words, pictures, symbols, and/or numbers.	Proficient The student is able to correctly show his/her mathematical understanding using at least two of the following: words, pictures, symbols, and/or numbers.	Distinguished The student is able to correctly show his/her mathematical understanding using all of the following: words, pictures, symbols and/or numbers.
Mathematical Strategies	Novice The student does not use any mathematical strategy, or the student uses a strategy that does not help to solve the problem.	Emerging The student uses a strategy that leads him or her to arrive at a partially correct answer. The answer is not completely accurate.	Proficient The student uses one strategy to solve the problem, and this strategy is completely accurate.	Distinguished The student uses more than one strategy to solve the problem, and each strategy is completely accurate.
Using Mathematical Language	Novice The students uses no mathematical language that relates to the task of counting money and making change.	Emerging The student uses 1-3 mathematical words related to counting money and making change.	Proficient The student uses 3-5 mathematical words related to counting money and making change.
