Beginning Sentence	Level 4 Beginning sentence creates interest and introduces the story.	Level 3 Beginning sentence introduces reader to story.	Level 2 Beginning sentence vaguely introduces reader to the story.	Level 1 Beginning does not introduce the reader to the story.
Characters	Level 4 Writer describes characters with detail including physical and personality traits.	Level 3 A good description is given of the characters with some traits.	Level 2 A basic description is given of characters with some physical traits.	Level 1 No description of the characters is given except for names.
Setting	Level 4 Writer is descriptive of the setting and helps reader create mental picture.	Level 3 A good description of setting is given in the story.	Level 2 Little description of the setting is given in the story	Level 1 No description of the setting is mentioned in the story.
