Topic Sentence	TARGET Shows a clear idea of the story and its content.	ACCEPTABLE Shows most of what is to be contained in the story.	EMERGENT The idea is not completely clear and minimal content listed.	UNACCEPTABLE No topic sentence or not clear idea where story if heading.
Conclusion	TARGET Restates topic sentence and wraps up the story nicely.	ACCEPTABLE Restates topic sentence but does not offer a compete wrap up of full content.	EMERGENT Does not restate topic sentence or does not completely wrap up the story's content.	UNACCEPTABLE No restating of topic sentence. Does not have closure to the story.
Spelling	TARGET All words are spelled correctly.	ACCEPTABLE 1-10 words misspelled.	EMERGENT 11-20 words misspelled.	UNACCEPTABLE More than 20 words misspelled.
Grammar	TARGET Proper usage of adjectives, onomatopoeia, and punctuation.	ACCEPTABLE Some errors with adjectives, onomatopoeia, and punctuation.	EMERGENT Has an understanding of what adjectives, onomatopoeia, and punctuation are but trouble with proper usage.	UNACCEPTABLE Has no clear understanding of adjectives, onomatopoeia, or punctuation usage or does not use them at all.
