Novels Literature Summary Students will read weekly chapter assignments and complete a three to five sentence summary for each chapter. They will also complete the main idea for each chapter read. The goal of this rubric is to obtain a better understanding of how to write a great summary and locate the main idea within a chapter, while using prior knowledge and textual features to indentify unknown or vocabulary words. Novel Summaries
	Excellent 3 pts	Good 2 pts	Needs Improvement 1 pts
Summary Students write a summary for the chapter they have read. They will list the Chapter.	Excellent Student response has summarized chapter just using 3-4 sentences.	Good Student response has summarized chapter with 6-8 sentences.	Needs Improvement Student response has summarized chapter, but contains too much information and not the main points.
Main Idea Students write the main idea and three supporting details for the chapter read.	Excellent Student response has main idea and three supporting details for the chapter read.	Good Student response has main idea and one or two supporting details for the chapter read.	Needs Improvement Student response has main idea, but no supporting details for the chapter read.
Language and Conventions Students use captial letters at the beginning of their sentences and correction punctuation in their response.	Excellent Student uses punctuation and uppercase letters correctly in response. Student spells all word wall words correctly.	Good Student uses punctuation and uppercase letters correctly most of the time. Student spells most word wall words correctly.	Needs Improvement Student does not use punctuation or uppercase letters in his/her response. Student does not spell word wall words correctly.
