Short Story Writing Short Story Writing Fiction Writing. Students must plan and write a short story based on an illustration. Students must use their proofreading and editing skills, as well as their knowledge of the plot pyramid (beginning, middle, climax, end) Rubric Code: K2A6W3 By stephslade Ready to use Public Rubric Subject: English Type: Writing Grade Levels: 6-8

Short Story Writing

Spelling/ Grammar (Proofreading/editing)	Poor Student has many errors in spelling and grammar.	Fair Student has made some errors in spelling and grammar.	Good Student has made few errors in spelling and grammar.	Excellent Student has made no errors in spelling and grammar.
Characters (character development)	Poor Characters are not developed. There is no consistancy throughout paper.	Fair Characters are beginning to be defined, but still have missing characteristics.	Good Characters are consistent throughout story. Still may leave reader wondering about personality and motives.	Excellent Characters are defined with excellent clarity. Reader gets to know characters and is able to understand motives and personality.
Plot Pyramid (beginning, middle, climax, end)	Poor Story does not make sense. Plot pyramid is not used.	Fair Story begins to use the plot pyrimid, but has missing pieces which easily confuses the reader.	Good Plot pyramid is consistant and most of story flows, but may be confusing.	Excellent Plot pyramid is excellent, and story flows from one scene to another.
Fluency/ Neatness Effort to be neat and paying attention to detail-spelling/neatness	Poor Spelling and Punctuation errors are numerous, causing reader to be easily confused. Student lacks the effort needed to make the writing neat and/or legible.	Fair Spelling and punctuation errors are numerous, but paper still makes sense. Writing is messy and it looks like the student rushed to finish.	Good Spelling and punctuation errors are minimal and paper is clear. Student took time to be neat.	Excellent Spelling and punctuation errors are almost non-existent. Paper is clear and easy to read. Penmanship is clear and easy to read. The student took their time and gave their best effort.
Prewriting/Draft	Poor No evidence of prewriting	Fair Part of a draft or brainstorming are evident.	Good Complete draft and brainstorming are included. Editing is visible in the rough copy.	Excellent Complete draft, prewriting and notes are included with story. Editing is visible in the rough draft and improves the final copy of the story.
