Claims Your opinion about an idea, issue or current event.	Beginning I have made a basic claim or stated an opinion.	Developing I have made a claim and explained my opinion.	Proficient I have made strong claims or shared my opinions based on evidence.	Extending I have made strong claims and included evidence or reasons for my opinion.
Supports Facts or evidence you use to explain your claims/opinions	Beginning I forgot to explain my claim/opinion using facts/evidence.	Developing I have included a few facts/evidence/reasons to explain my claim.	Proficient I have included several facts/evidence/reasons to argue my claim. I have shown some thought and research to develop support my opinions.	Extending I have included several facts/evidence/ reasons to argue my claim. I make meaningful connections between the evidence and my opinion. I have also included the sources of my research.
Conventions spelling, grammar, punctuation	Beginning My errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar & usage make my paper difficult to read.
