Descriptive Writing Rubric Descriptive Writing Rubric Students will describe a favorite place using sensory words to create a descriptive essay. Writing will be graded on capitalization, punctuation, use of a clear main idea, supporting details, spelling, plural and possessive noun use, use of sensory words and creative adjectives. Main Idea & Details 3 pts	Excellent Essay contains a strong topic/main idea and closing along with adequate major details with supporting details.	Satisfactory Essay contains a clear topic and closing with a few major and minor details.	Needs Improvement The essay does not contain a clear main idea and/or closing and/or related details.
Grammar 3 pts	Excellent The essay contains proper use of Grammar	Satisfactory The essay contains 1 or two grammatical errors	Needs Improvement The essay contains 3 or more grammatical errors
Description- similes/metaphors 3 pts	Excellent The essay contains at least 2 similes.	Satisfactory The essay contains 1 simile.	Needs Improvement The essay is missing similes.
Spelling- 3 pts	Excellent The essay is free of spelling errors.	Satisfactory The essay has 1 or 2 spelling errors.	Needs Improvement The essay has 3 or more spelling errors.
