The student may have some punctuation, but is unsure about how or when to use it. The sentences can be understood, but do not show good development. The student sometimes starts sentences with uppercase letters.
Good
The student uses punctuation consistently. The sentences are clearly formed and understandable. The student uses uppercase and lowercase letter appropriately.

The student does not stay on one topic. The student has used no planning strategy before writing. None of the ideas are fully developed.
Fair
The student stays of one topic. There is some planning evident in the writing. The ideas are not completely developed. The writing piece leaves questions to be asked.
Good
The student fully developes the one given topic. Planning strategies are used and attached to the writing sample. The writing flows clearly from one main idea and includes full development of the topic.

The student does not use many descriptive words in writing.
The reader does is not left with a mental picture.
Fair
The student does use some descriptive language.
The reader may have a vague mental picture.
Good
The student uses rich, descriptive language that gives the reader a vivid mental picture.
