Appendix A: Reading Comprehension Rubric 
This rubric helps to assess the reading development of students who will engage in fiction and non-fiction works in literature circles.

Connects to the Text

Poor

The student makes no connection to the text; can not or will not find similarities between what he/she read and his/her own experience.
Fair

The student begins to make connection to the text, possibly a literal similarity to a character or setting.
Adequate

The student connects himself/herself to the story, possibly through a conflict or change in a character
Good

The student discovers multiple similarities between himself/herself in the story.
Superior

The student can connect himself/herself to a narrator or character and discuss the thematic value of those connections.
Questions the Text

Poor

The student does not formulate any questions about what he/she has read.
Fair

The student may ask questions about the literal or factual events of the story.
Adequate

The student questions the behavior or actions of characters in the narrative.
Good

The student begins to question the choices of the caharacter, and even possibly the choices of the author to make the story interesting.
Superior

The student questions why the author has written the story in a particular manner, suggesting that the way the story is written affects the meaning.
Understands Importance of Text

Poor

Student cannot indicate or mark any particular portion of the text as being of importance or significance.
Fair

Student may highlight passages within the text, but they may not be significant to the author's main idea or purpose.
Adequate

Student highlights at least one passage of importance and can comment on its significance to author's purpose or theme.
Good

Student highlights a few passages of importance and can comment on their significance to author's purpose or theme.
Superior

Student highlights several passages, can connect their those passages to one another, and explain how they progress toward meaning.
Infers from the Text

Poor

Student cannot create an inference from any part of the text.
Fair

Student may attempt to infer, but the inference may be misquided or discionnected from the story.
Adequate

Student makes an inference and can demonstrate its meaning beyond the literal.
Good

Student can easily make inferences in several instances with accurate meaning beyond the literal.
Superior

Student easily makes inferences anmd can discuss the multiple meanings to them as they relate to the themes of the work
