Good Drawing demonstrates understanding of value and includes approximately 3 to 4 values from light to dark.	Excellent Drawing demonstrates a good understanding of value and includes 5 to 6 values from light to dark.
Contour Observation	Novice Student's drawing reflects some resemblance to the observed object.	Fair Student's drawing reflects resemblance to the outside shape of the observed object.	Good Student's drawing reflects careful observation of the object studied.	Excellent Student's drawing reflects careful observation of the object studied and small details are obvious in the lines drawn.
Shading	Novice Shading is barely attempted.	Fair Shading is minimal. More could be done.	Good Shading is done gradually and in the appropriate places.	Excellent Shading is done gradually with soft pencil strokes, smooth transitions and in the appropriate places.
Overall Composition	Novice The composition feels unfinished and has a lot of empty space.	Fair The composition has small objects and needs more to fill the space.	Good The composition is visually well balanced.	Excellent The composition fills the picture plane in an interesting way using the negative space as part of the composition. The composition holds the eye.
