Introductory Paragraph

This paragraph introduces the essay's purpose and includes a thorough thesis statement. Thesis statement should be one to two sentences that include the essay's purpose along with two points that prove the purpose.

There is a thesis, two points, and it grabs the reader's attention.
First Body Paragraph

This paragraph should include the thesis statements first main point. It must be effectively explained. The point must be exemplified through evidence from your sources. Thorough details must be given. The writer must be specific.

Beginner/Emerging

The paragraph does not have information from either main point.
Average

The paragraph has information about a main point, but it is not the first main point of the thesis.
Advanced

The paragraph has info about the first main point, but it lacks details and evidence.
Superior

The paragraph includes info on the first main point, includes detail, and it is backed up with evidence.
Second Body Paragraph

This paragraph should include the thesis statements second main point. It must be effectively explained. The point must be exemplified through evidence from your sources. Thorough details must be given. The writer must be specific.

The paragraph does not have information from either main point.
Average

The paragraph has information about a main point, but it is not the second main point of the thesis.
Advanced

The paragraph has info about the second main point, but it lacks details and evidence.

Conclusion

The last paragraph should be a thorough summary of the points made within the essay. The points should once again be tied back to the essay purpose.

There is no conclusion.
Average

The conclusion is off topic.
Advanced

The conclusion does not summarize the main points, OR it includes the phrase, "In conclusion."
Superior

The conclusion is a summary of the main points of the essay.
Organization

Essay restates and answers the chosen prompt and follows the format of a well written thesis statement.

Beginner/Emerging

The essay does not include information from the thesis statement.
Average

The essay restates information from the thesis, but the writer gets off topic.
Advanced

The essay restates information from the thesis, but the writer is very general.
Superior

The essay restates the information, and the writer stays on topic throughout.
Conventions/MLA Format

Essay is highly accurate in use of conventions, especially in subject/verb agreement, sentence structure, paragraph transition sentences, spelling mechanics, etc. Four paragraph essay format is followed precisely and MLA format is smoothly utilized in all areas.

Beginner/Emerging

Several spelling/grammatical errors. There are no transition words/sentences used for paragraphs.
Average

Has either several spelling/grammatical errors, OR it lacks transition words/sentences for new paragraphs.
