Characters Enter description	Poor It is hard to tell who the main characters are and there is little or no use of direct or indirect characterization techniques.	Fair The main characters are named using a few direct and indirect characterization techniques. The reader knows very little about the characters.	Good The main characters are named and described using some direct and indirect techniques. Most readers would have some idea of what the characters are like.	Excellent The main characters are well named and clearly described. A variety of direct and indirect techniques are used. Readers could describe the characters accurately.

Ending	Poor The story is unfinished.	Fair The story closes in a matter-of-fact or haphazard way.	Good The story closes with some awareness of the reader's enjoyment.	Excellent The story builds intensity creatively and the closing contributes to the reader's enjoyment.
