Independent Reading Rubric
	Poor 1 pts	Fair 2 pts	Good 3 pts	Excellent 4 pts
Book selection	Poor Student was not able to self-select a book. Teacher/librarian needed to select a book for the student.	Fair Student self-selects a book that he/she has read before.	Good Student self-selects a book which he/she has not read before. Book is below reading level or significantly above reading level.	Excellent Student self-selects a book which he/she has not read before. Book is at his/her reading level.
Stays on task	Poor Student wastes a lot of reading time.	Fair Student reads some of the time. 50%	Good Student reads almost all of the period. 80%	Excellent Student reads the entire period.
Interest in the book	Poor Student pretends to read the story. Mostly looks around, moves around, or fiddles with things.	Fair Student seems to be reading the story, but doesn't seem very interested. Takes some short breaks.	Good Student seems to be enjoying the story but takes some short breaks.	Excellent Student is completely interested in the book. There is no looking around time or flipping through the pages.
Understands the story	Poor Student has trouble telling the story elements. Student is not able to retell the story.	Fair Student knows or names the important characters or other story elements, but is not able to retell the story.	Good Student is aware of the story elements and can retell some parts of the story.	Excellent Student can explain the story elements (setting, charachters, and important events) and can retell the story, in detail, in own words.
Completes reading log	Poor Student did not complete the reading log.	Fair Student complete some but not all sections of the reading log.	Good Student completes all parts of the required assignment. Student does not show good knowledge of the week's reading skill and/or graphic organizer.	Excellent Student completes all of the required assignment. Student shows good knowledge of the week's reading skill and uses the graphic organizer.
