Original Poem Writing Rubric 
Students will write an original ANIMAL EPIC poem in their group. Poem will have 10 stanzas with a minimum of 4 lines per stanza. Students should rhyme the poem and make sure there is a hero, animal main character and a problem in the poem.

Poem has engaging ideas. It is evident that the poet put thought into the diction and was innovative in conveying the ideas and emotions of the poem.

Poem is thoughtful and creative. A couple of phrases or ideas may be revisited, but the overall product is carefully written.

Poem shows a fair amount of originality and thoughtfulness, yet it is sprinkled with cliche ideas/idioms.

No punctuation or spelling errors. Shows a strong grasp of poetic language through creative use of punctuation.

Few grammatical errors that do not distract the reader. Punctuation is congruent with the tone of the poem.

Errors are noticeable. Spelling and punctuation are fair yet not reflective of student's skills. Poem is readable, yet mistakes distract the reader. Punctuation usage is acceptable for tone of poem.

Punctuation and spelling is poor and not reflective of student's true capabilities. Poor mechanics interferes with the poem's readability. No apparent revision done in mechanics.
