Pillowcase Evaluation 
This rubric is for a grade 8 pillow project in which 8 different sewing techniques were demonstrated: Layout, Pinning, Cutting, Top Stitching, Seams, Seam Finishing, Embroidery and Hand Sewing.

Use of Sewing Machine

Advanced

Knew how to thread machine and operate it successfully. Was able to troubleshoot problems and was a help to others.

Fabric, Pinning and Cutting

Advanced

Demonstrated proper use of layout. Pinning was consistent during cutting and sewing. Cutting was smooth, accurate, straight and added to a superior quality.
Proficient

Demonstrated proper use of layout. Pinning was accurate in most cases. Cutting is accurate with some jagged edges.
Low Proficient

Some cutting was jagged and not accurate. Pinning was not always utilized during construction.
Basic/Minimal

Pinning not effective. Cutting is not accurate, very jagged and affects construction.
Band/accent piece

Advanced

Band/accent piece pressed evenly, right sides out. Fabric band, accent piece and pillowcase fabric lined up and pinned evenly according to the video directions. Seam sewn straight with proper seam allowance (1/4") and back-stitched.
Proficient

Few errors with band/accent piece. Fabric is mostly lined up and pinned evenly. Seam mostly sewed straight with proper seam allowance (1/4") and back-stitched.
Low Proficient

Several errors with the band/accent piece. Fabric not lined up straight and pinned properly. Seam 1/4" is crooked in many places and back-stitching is not done or there is too much. and seam finishes.
Basic/Minimal

Little attention to lining up the fabric band/accent piece, seam allowance is not 1/4", back-stitching not done.
Sewing Techniques: french seam

Advanced

All sewing techniques demonstrated in pillowcase are of high quality. French seam technique was done properly and with skill.
Proficient

Many sewing techniques demonstrated in pillowcase are of good quality. Most french seam technique is done properly and with care.
Low Proficient

Many sewing techniques demonstrated in pillowcase require improvement. French seam technique is lacking proficiency.
Basic/Minimal

Intended competency to demonstrate sewing techniques is not evident. French seam technique was not attempted.
Appearance:clean and neat

Advanced

Project construction was correctly shaped and aligned. Seams match correctly. The project has a polished look and is pleasing to the eye. All threads cut and pressed.
Proficient

Project has few problems with shaping and alignment. Seams intersect closely. The project has been completed with attention to detail. Some threads and pressed.
Low Proficient

The project has some problems with shaping and alignment. Seams may be obviously mismatched. The project is lacking visual appeal in some areas. Many threads and somewhat pressed.
Basic/Minimal

The project has problem areas with shaping and alignment. Seam matching is not appropriate. Visually, the project is not pleasing, too many threads and not pressed.
Time management

Advanced

Project materials were brought in on time and was also completed on time or early. Student used class time efficiently and stayed on task.
Proficient

Project materials were brought in on time and effectively used class time and remained on task with few reminders.
Low Proficient

Class time was not always used efficiently and student was often off task.
Basic/Minimal

Did not use class time efficiently and required many reminders to stay on task. Student did not have materials on time.
Self evaluation

Advanced

I did an excellent job. I am very pleased with the final outcome
Proficient

I have done my best work. I could improve on my sewing technique, cutting and following directions.
Low Proficient

Most of the time I did my best work but could have fixed some errors and followed the directions better.
Basic/Minimal

I did not take time to do my best work. I made several mistakes and did not fix them. I did not follow directions.
Clean up

Advanced

The student cleaned up their area and helped clean up the room on a daily basis.
Proficient

The student cleaned up their area.
Low Proficient

Student only cleaned up their area occasionally when reminded.
Basic/Minimal

Student did not clean up their area on a daily basis. Student left out items nearly every day.
