Class Participation Grade Criteria 
Below is a chart that shows you exactly how your class participation grade will be evaluated. All students are expected to participate in class! Students should understand that their participation mark begins at 0 and then is built up through active participation.

ATTENDANCE

Excellent

Student is always on time and regularly attends classes.
Good

Student is late to class twice or less and regularly attends classes.
Fair

Student may or may not attend class regularly (three absences) and may be late sometimes.
Poor

Student has four or more absences in the semester and may be late to class sometimes.
PUNCTUALITY

Excellent

Student is on time regularly or early for class.
Good

Student is usually on time or early (one or two tardies).
Fair

Student is sometimes on time (three or four tardies).
Poor

Student is often late, four or more times.
PREPARATION

Excellent

Student is always prepared for class with assignments and required materials punctually. Student takes notes without being prompted to.
Good

Student is usually prepared for class with assignments and required materials, possibly attempting to submit some materials late. Sometimes, student needs to be prompted to take notes.
Fair

Student is frequently unprepared for class with assignments and required materials, possibly attempting to submit some materials late. Often, student needs to be prompted to take notes.
Poor

Student is almost always unprepared for class with assignments and required materials, possibly attempting to submit some materials late. Student almost always needs to be prompted to take notes.
LEVEL OF ENGAGEMENT AND BEHAVIOR

Excellent

Student asks questions, participates in pair/group discussions and does not use cell phone at all.
Good

Student asks questions, and participates in pair/group discussions. May have used cell phone at least once.
Fair

Student rarely participates in class, struggles with pair/group discussions. May have used cell phone two or three times.
Poor

Student never participates in class, does not participate in pair/group discussions. May have used cell phone four or more times.
ATTITUDE

Excellent

Student always presents a positive attitude towards the course, their fellow students, and their professor.
Good

Student usually presents a positive attitude towards the course, their fellow students, and their professor.
Fair

Student sometimes presents a positive attitude towards the course, their fellow students, and their professor.
Poor

Student never presents a positive attitude towards the course, their fellow students, and their professor.
Teamwork

Excellent

Works as part of a team, mentors others in the team, and assists others in understanding the material. Leads and follows eagerly and appropriately.
Good

Works well in a group, discusses issues, and assumes an equal share of the group “duties.”
Fair

Often works independent of the group, and does other things when his/her part of the assignment is complete.
Poor

Lacks involvement in group activities, and shows complete apathy towards group activities.
