BIOME Diorama Project
BIOME Project
This is a project that integrates ecology and biology. Students write a short report (2-3 pages) about a biome of their choice and write a description about its locations/characteristics, as well as all the biotic and abiotic factors found in that biome. Reports are required to specifically discuss climate, location, plant life and animal life in the biome. Then the students must create a 3D model dioarama that reflects/illustrates the biome's features.

Standard Not Met (2)
Climate description is not included in research report
Limited (3)
Description is inaccurate or incomplete
Progressing (4)
Description contains some inaccuracies

x 2
Standard Not Met (2)
Food web is not included in research report
Limited (3)
Food web is inaccurate or incomplete (4-6 organisms)
Progressing (4)

Meets Standard (5)
Food web is accurate, correctly labeled, and contains at least 10 organisms
Adaptations
x 2
Standard Not Met (2)
Discussions of plant and/or animal adaptations are inaccurate or incomplete
Limited (3)
Adaptations of plants and animals are discussed but the requirements were not completely met (e.g. not enough living things or no inclusion of a plant)
Progressing (4)
Adaptations of plants and animals are discussed but it is not clearly explained how the adaptations help the living things survive in the given biome
Meets Standard (5)
Adaptations of plants and animals are well-covered, including clear description of how the adaptations help the living things survive in the given biome
Presentation
x 2
Standard Not Met (2)
Presentation is incomplete
Limited (3)
Presentation is complete but with major inaccuracies and/or with little to no evidence of time spent
Progressing (4)
Presentation is complete and mostly accurate
Meets Standard (5)
Presentation is complete and accurate and shows strong evidence of time spent and/or innovation & creativity
minimum: 3 minutes
maximum: 5 minutes
Ecological Factors
x 3
Standard Not Met (2)
Project does not mention nor illustrate any ecological factor
Limited (3)
Project only mentions/illustrates a few types of vegetation or animals, or only mentions fewer than required
Progressing (4)
Project identifies less than 6 types of animals; less than 4 types of vegetation and less than 5 or abiotic factors.
They are described with visuals.
Meets Standard (5)
Project identifies 6 or more animals; 4 or more types of vegetation and 5 or more abiotic factors
Includes information and pictures/descriptions/models
Reporting/Sharing Information
x 2
Standard Not Met (2)
Student did not participate in the sharing of presentations, reports, and displays with other classes.
Limited (3)
Student was unable to respond to questions about presented material and lacked eye contact and professional manner.

Student did not consistently speak clearly or loudly. Maintained eye contact with audience and professional attitude (not fooling around or giggling)
Student was partially able to respond to questions about presented material.
Meets Standard (5)
Student was clear and confident during sharing time; made eye contact, spoke loud enough to be heard, maintained professional attitude, and was able to discuss the content well.
Creativity
x 2
Standard Not Met (2)
Diorama was made with just a couple of materials, shows very little effort and does not illustrate any creativity
Limited (3)
Diorama used a few materials, not much diversity, though.
Progressing (4)
Shows some creativity, but not enough diversity of materials were used. Elements are vaguely seen
Meets Standard (5)
Diorama used diverse materials, elements were neatly and creatively laid out
Sturdiness
Standard Not Met (2)
Materials used were very poor in material and easily torn/damaged
Limited (3)
Materials used can somehow last for a few days
Progressing (4)
materials used were sturdy enough for the project be displayed and will to last for at least a month
Meets Standard (5)
materials used were durable and sturdy and project can be displayed and can last at least until the end of the school year.
