Bodily Adjustments

Very Good

Movements and vocal choices are changed to reflect those of the chosen character.

Anyone familiar with the character can recognize him or her from the first movement.
Good

Movements and vocal choices begin to resemble those of the chosen character.

After a little bit, the audience may begin to recognize the character.
Fair

Movements and vocal choices occasionally resemble the character but mostly come from the actor/actress's own mannerisms.

The audience has a hard time recognizing the character.
Poor

Movements and vocal choices are exclusively those of the actor/actress.

The audience has no idea who the character might be.
Ornaments

Very Good

Physical appearance is altered to resemble the chosen character.

It is immediately clear who your character is.
Good

Physical appearance has some alteration and the character/ornamentation, and the chosen character begins to be apparent.
Fair

Ornamentation is altered slightly, but it retains most of the appearance of the actor/actress.

It is not evident who the character is based solely on appearance.
Poor

There is minimal or no physical appearance alteration.

The audience does not recognize the character.
Physical States

Very Good

The state of your character is illustrated through action and activity. The audience sees how you feel by how you perform tasks.

A clear activity has been chosen.
Good

The state of your character is illustrated through action. The audience gets a vague sense of how your character feels.
Fair

The state of your character is illustrated through cliché movements that tell rather than show how your character feels.

The audience doesn't believe your character.
Poor

The state of your character is not illustrated. You do not seem to have any emotional affect or to have much feeling at all.
Preparation

Very Good

The monologue is cut to the proper length, can be performed as a logical monologue, and is completely memorized.
Good

Either the monologue is cut to the wrong length, the cutting doesn't make sense, or there are minor memorization faults.
Fair

The monologue is cut to the wrong length AND doesn't make sense, or it doesn't make sense AND isn't memorized, or is cut to the wrong length AND isn't memorized.
Poor

There is a visible lack of preparation. None of the monologue is memorized and the read text doesn't make sense. Or, the performer reads the text with poor inflection and evidently lacks comprehension.
Research & Paperwork

Very Good

A complete, typed paper assignment with an attractive heading and simple font choices (Times New Roman, Arial, Cambria, Calibri) is turned in. The paper includes textual and visual (images/photos) references to research about the character.
Good

A rough typed draft or a complete handwritten paper is turned in. There is a small amount of research (textual or visual, probably not both) about the character included in the paper.
Fair

A rough handwritten draft is turned in. There may be some clipped out photos of the character, or some words describing the character, but it is evident that the research was not comprehensive.
Poor

A few lines of a handwritten paper are turned in. There is no research to accompany it, and the general presentation of the paper is sloppy.
