Making your own Map Making your own Map Students are going to create a map of a state or island that they are going to make up. They must give the state/island a name, a description of what it is like in their state/island and draw a map of it. It can be any shape, color, and form of their choice, but it must be creative. Also, it must have a key, compass rose, cardinal directions, mountains, and rivers. We are creating thematic maps so there must be borders. They will work 4 in a group. Map Components	Poor Map has no components.	Fair Map has some components but not all key, compass rose, cardinal directions, mountains and rivers.	Good Map has clear key, compass rose, cardinal directions, mountains and rivers.	Exemplary Map goes above and beyond with key, compass rose, cardinal directions, mountains and rivers.
Description of community	Poor No description of community.	Fair Description of community is present but missing some points.	Good Clear description of what it is like in the community.	Exemplary Student gives detailed description about community and incorporates realistic details such as state bird, state flower, etc.
Relative size and Borders	Poor Map does not display relative size or borders.	Fair Map has relative size but is not completely accurate with few borders.	Good Students show understanding of relative size on map and displays borders properly.	Exemplary Student shows exact relative size of everything on map and has borders displayed.
Creativity	Poor Map is plain with no creative approach.	Fair Map has little creative approach.	Good Map is creative and colorful.	Exemplary The map shows artistic abilities with plenty of creativity present.
