SMAW Welding Bead Assessment: SMAW Welding Bead Assessment: The student's welds will be assessed using SMAW techniques in (1F,2F,3F,4F) & (1G,2G,3G,4G) positions. Rubric Code: FXW6XAC By Flathead Ready to use Public Rubric Subject: Vocational Type: Assessment Grade Levels: 9-12

Weld Width & Height: Uniform width and thickness throughout the entire length of the weld.	Advanced Bead is uniform width all along the length of each weld. Smooth appearance.	Proficient Bead maintains width and height. Shows some small blemishes along the weld.	Basic Not uniform through out the weld. Thickness goes to extremes.	Below Basic Weld is cut off in places, not uniform along the weld. Shows bare spots.	Total Points
Travel Speed: Smooth with uniform dense ripples, doesn’t show the bead traveling to fast or slow	Advanced Weld shows a constant speed and uniformity the entire length.	Proficient Weld shows a constant speed with some minimal blemishes.	Basic Weld shows definite areas of speeding up and slowing down. Ripples tend to be coarse.	Below Basic Weld has been done to fast or to slow. Weld is not complete.	Total Points
Face of Weld: Convex, free of voids and high spots, shows uniformity throughout the bead	Advanced Has a nice rounded look. Is not overly high, or low. Bead covers a wide area of each weld.	Proficient Bead is well rounded, mostly uniform over the length of the weld. Shows some high and low spots.	Basic Bead shows many high and low area's. Total lack of uniformity throughout the weld	Below Basic Weld does not blend into one single bead.	Total Points
Toe of Weld: Good fusion, no overlapping or undercutting	Advanced Sides and edges are smooth blending into the surface. Undercutting and float are minimal.	Proficient Moderately smooth blending. Undercutting and float are present. Strength of the weld is still strong.	Basic Float and undercut are very apparent. Weld lacks strength and flow.	Below Basic Metal is burned through. Weld has no connection to the metal.	Total Points
Start & Stop: Full size weld from beginning to end. Crater well filled	Advanced The start is uniform, no signs of rod fusion. End of weld is complete, does not taper off. Crater is full.	Proficient Uniform start with some signs of rod fusion. Ending is full but some tapering and a crater is present.	Basic Start is globular with distinct signs of rod fusion. Crater distinctly present at the end of the bead.	Below Basic Start is globular and separated with pieces of rod fused to surface. Metal is burned through at the end.	Total Points
