INTRODUCTION	Good The introduction is inviting, states the main topic and previews the structure of the paper.	Fair The introduction states the main topic, but does not adequately preview the structure of the paper nor is it particularly inviting to the reader.	Poor There is no clear introduction of the main topic or structure of the paper.
FOCUS ON TOPIC	Good There is one clear, well-focused topic. Main idea stands out and is supported by detailed information.	Fair Main idea is clear but the supporting information is general and there are no clear details	Poor The main idea is not clear. There is a need for more supporting information and/or there is a seemingly random collection of information
SUPPORT FOR TOPIC Details, choice vocab, figurative language.	Good Three or more quality details give the reader important information that goes beyond the obvious or predictable.	Fair Two supporting details and information are given and are relative to the topic.	Poor One or no supportive detail are given and are not relative or supportive of the topic.
CONCLUSION	Good The conclusion is strong and leaves the reader with a feeling that they understand what the writer is "getting at."	Fair The conclusion is recognizable, but does not tie up several loose ends	Poor There is no clear conclusion, the paper just ends.
CONVENTIONS Spelling, grammar, punctuation.	Good The response demonstrates very few errors in the conventions of mechanics, usage, and spelling. Sentence structure is varied throughout response.	Fair The writing contains some errors in the conventions of mechanics, usage, spelling. There is basic variety in sentence structure.	Poor The writing contains various errors in the conventions of mechanics, usage and spelling. There are errors in basic sentence structure, as well as limited sentence variety.
