Net Construction
Students will create the net of a shape. They will identify whether the net is of a pyramid or a prism. They will then construct the net and create it as a real life object (e.g. a tower, an Egyptian pyramid, a Christmas present, etc.)

Thinking

- understanding of the task: draw a net, construct the shape, design into everyday object

- critical/creative thinking process

Level 1

- student uses limited planning skills (extreme disorganization)

- student uses limited creativity (object not represented as a real life object)
Level 2

- student uses some effective planning skills (somewhat of an action plan created)

- student uses some creativity (shape was created with some creative effort)
Level 3

- student uses considerable effective planning skills (plan of action set in place, followed step by step)

- student uses creative thinking process with considerable evidence (creative representation of shape)
Level 4

- student demonstrates thorough planning skills (has revised their plan for effectiveness along the way, tracked the progress of their design construction)

- student uses thorough creative thinking process (design is beyond a traditional building/tower)
Communication

- use of proper vocabulary to explain desgn

Level 1

- student expresses limited vocabulary (no mathematical terms to explain design)
Level 2

- student expresses some mathematical vocabulary (basic understanding of 3D vs 2D shape)
Level 3

- student expresses considerable knowledge of mathematical vocabulary (distinguishes whether it is a pyramid or prism, 3D vs. 2D, deconstruction of net is proper and in line with the design created )
Level 4

- student expresses thorough knowledge of mathematical vocabulary (pyramid vs. prism, 3D vs. 2D, describes the shape and the classification (e.g. regular vs irregular prism)
