Introduction - 3-6 sentences

Proficient

Introduction is concise and introduces topic in a general but interesting way. Student does an excellent job providing background information and providing the outline for the rest of the paper.
Adequate

Introduction introduces topic but is wordy or too specific. Provides some background information, but does not provide an outline for the paper.
Progressing

Introduction attempts to introduce topic. Following points are not obvious or fail to provide an outline for the paper.
Beginning

There is a beginning paragraph but it is not an introduction. Missing at least one element of an introduction.
Not proficient

Little to no concept of an introduction. Student is off topic and the material is not relevant to the nature of the assignment.
3 Supporting Paragraphs

Each paragraph has between 3-7 sentences

Proficient

Three supporting paragraphs exist; they support the main idea/thesis and are clearly described.
Adequate

Three supporting paragraphs exist; they support the main idea/thesis and are adequately described.
Progressing

Less than three supporting paragraphs exist and/or they are weakly described.
Beginning

Less than three supporting paragraphs exist and/or they are poorly described.
Not proficient

Paragraphs do not support the thesis/main idea and/or there is no order to the design of the paper.
Conclusion - 3-4 sentences

Proficient

Conclusion is concise and summarizes supporting points: restates the thesis in a new way.
Adequate

Conclusion provides a summary of supporting points: it is wordy and does not restate the thesis.
Progressing

Conclusion may be attempted, but does not summarize or restate thesis.
Beginning

The essay has a final paragraph, but the essay has no end.
Not proficient

The final paragraph is off topic and has no relevance to the written paper.
Conventions
Mechanics

Proficient

Errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization are not found (0-3).
Adequate

Minimal errors are found (4-6). They do not detract from the general flow of the essay.
Progressing

There are several errors (7-9) that detract from the overall meaning and flow of the essay.
Beginning

There are so many errors (10+) that reading is completely overshadowed by the quantity of errors.
Not proficient

Incorrect use of grammar and punctuation, including failure to capitalize sentences, and lack of punctuation in the essay.
Flow/Transitions

Proficient

Writing flows easily.
Adequate

Vocabulary or writing style lacks some flow.
Progressing

Sentences are short and/or contain run-ons or comma splices. Flow of essay is hard to follow.
Beginning

Fragments abound. Difficult to follow meaning.
Not proficient

Essay does not have any flow or order to it.
