Free-verse Poetry Rubric Free-verse Poetry Rubric Students will write a free-verse poem containing facts about nature, using interesting word choices, poetic devices and punctuation that helps the reader. Meaning and Originality	Level Four Poems is creative and original. It is evident that the poet put thought into their words and innovatively conveyed their ideas and emotions.	Level Three Poem is thoughtful and creative. A couple of phrases or ideas may be revised, but the overall product is carefully written.	Level Two The poem is creative, but appears to be rushed or used little effort. This is evident in the poet's lack of organization or random ideas.	Level One Poem appears to be thoughtless or rushed. Work is very repetitive, and ideas are impersonal or unoriginal.
Poetic Devices	Level Four Poem uses 3 or more different poetic devices discussed in class.	Level Three Poem has 2-3 different poetic discussed in class.	Level Two Poem has 1-2 different poetic devices dicussed in class. Or uses the same poetic device throughout.	Level One Poem does not use figurative language or any poetic devices discussed in class.
Grammar	Level Four Proper use of modern English spelling and grammar is employed consistently throughout the poem. Punctuation is utilized when necessary.	Level Three A couple of spelling or grammar mistakes are evident, but do not diminish the meaning of the poem. Punctuation is utilized when necessary.	Level Two The poet's intended meaning is muddled by several spelling or grammar errors. Punctuation may be misused.	Level One There are numerous spelling or grammar errors, making the poem difficult to understand. Puncutation is used incorrectly.
Independence	Level Four The student required little to no assistance from the teacher in drafting and revising except for a few spelling errors.	Level Three The student required some teacher assistance in drafting and/or revising, but for the most part, the student created the poem independently.	Level Two The student had difficulty with drafting and revising the poem. The teacher guided the student through at least half of the poem.	Level One The student was unable to grasp the concept and required guidance throughout the drafting and revising process. The teacher had to help write most of the poem.
