Music Composition Project 
Students will compose a Blues style Jazz Combo piece using their knowledge of Jazz Band music.

Melodic Line

The piece has a clear melodic idea in the beginning and the end.

Superior

Melodic idea is clear, makes musical sense and is performed well by members of the group. Melodic line is present and compelte in beginning and end of piece.
Good

Melodic line is generally clear but, may be lacking some musical sense or creativity. Melodic line is compelte at the beginning and end of the piece.
Poor

Melodic line is not complete. Cannot be performed by memers of the group.
Solo Section

The piece contains a solo section based on the 12 bar blues progression.

Superior

Solo section is compelte, based on the 12 bar blues and is performed correctly and with creativity by members of the group.
Good

Solo section is compelte and based on the 12 bar blues. Members are able to perform the solo section but it may be lacking creativity or proper chord changes from the soloists.
Poor

Members of the group are unable to successfully perform the solo section using a 12 bar blues progression.
Swing Style

Rhythms and style of piece are characteristic of Swing Style

Superior

Piece is written and performed using proper characteristics of swing style. Students perform using proper swing style.
Good

Piece is written generally using swing style. Students perform the piece well, but lack some of the characteristic elements of swing style- ie:triplet feel, articulation, etc.
Poor

Piece is not written or performed in swing style.
Notation

All members of the group have notated their parts and turn them in.

Superior

All memebrs of the group notate their parts, use their music to perform and turn in their music. The music has a title, and is written neatly.
Good

All members of the group notate their part, use their music to perform and turn in their music.<BR>
Music does not have a title or, is not legible.
Poor

All members of the group do not notate their music. All parts cannot be turned in. Music is unable to be read by the teacher.
