Main Idea	Below Basic The main idea does not reflect that of the chosen piece.	Basic The main idea somewhat reflects that of the chosen piece.	Proficient The main idea correctly reflects that of the chosen piece.	Advanced The main idea directly reflects that of the chosen piece.
Supporting Sentences	Below Basic The supporting words or sentences do not correlate with the main idea.	Basic The supporting word or sentences partially correlate with the main idea.	Proficient Most of the supporting words and or sentences correlate with the main idea.	Advanced The supporting sentences directly correlate with the main idea.
Spelling	Below Basic All writing includes spelling errors. (contains no writing, just pictures)	Basic Many (four or more) spelling errors exist.	Proficient Few (less than four) spelling errors exist.	Advanced No spelling errors exist.
Physical Appearance	Below Basic Handwriting is illegible.	Basic Handwriting is messy.	Proficient Handwriting is a little messy, but still legible.	Advanced Handwriting is neat and aesthetically pleasing.
