Journal entries are made every once in awhile. Journal entries are 3-5 sentences long. Journal entries communicate a nearly-developed thought.

(example: the student names a character and states something they know about the character that is not explicitly stated in the text, such as the character's personality or feelings).

Journal entries do not demonstrate any use of effective reading strategies (inferences, predictions, sequencing, etc...).
Progressing (C-D)
Journal entries demonstrate that the student is making some use of effective reading strategies (inferences, predictions, sequencing, etc...) but thoughts are not complete.
Meeting/Above (A-B)
Journal entries demonstrate that the student is making use of effective reading strategies (inferences, predictions, sequencing, etc...) in complete thoughts.
Variety of genres
Improvement Needed (F)
Student does not show variety of genres each grading quarter (only 1 genre).
Progressing (C-D)
Student reads a small variety of genres each grading quarter (2 different genres).
Meeting/Above (A-B)
Student reads a variety of genres each grading quarter (at least 4 different genres).
Neatness/error free work
Improvement Needed (F)
Journal entries are not able to be read. Messy handwriting, spelling mistakes, grammar errors, little or no capitals/periods.
Progressing (C-D)
Journal entries need some work on neatness. Some complete sentences, mistakes in grammar, spelling and most of entry has capitals/periods.

Journal entries are neat and easy to read. Complete sentences, no mistakes in grammar, spelling, or capitals/periods.
