	Advanced 4 pts	Proficent 3 pts	Basic 2 pts	Below Basic 1 pts
Mechanics/grammar	Advanced - Journal entries are written neatly and legibly - Minimal spelling errors - There are no distracting mechanical errors -There are no distracting grammatical errors	Proficent 3 of the items in the Excellent category are true.	Basic 2 of the items in the Excellent category are true.	Below Basic 1 of the items in the Excellent category are true.
Critical thinking	Advanced - Responses show the student has put a great deal of thought into what he/she writes - The ideas are complex and show thinking that is "outside of the box" - Understands the journal or writing prompt.	Proficent - Entries are good and show the writer is thinking deeply about the topic and attempting to push toward more advanced ways of approaching the prompt	Basic - Student has a complete entry, but may not be pushing his/her ideas toward original ways of looking at the topic	Below Basic - Entry feels rushed and lacks much depth of thought - Student needs to put more effort into pushing his/her ideas to a deeper level
Coherence/organization	Advanced - Good support with no repetition - Long enough to clearly answer the prompt/reflect on the material - Clear and easily understood by reader - Vocabulary appropriate for grade level - Excellent sentence variety	Proficent 4 of the items in the Excellent category are true.
