Restate Question w/ Answer
Excellent
Student has fully restated the question and has included a detailed answer to the question that is succinct. (Short and directly to the point. No fluff)
Good
Student has restated the question and included an answer but it may be vague or unclear.
Needs Improvement
The answer or the restating of the question is very confusing (doesn't make sense when read), lacks the full answer or the student has included the wrong question that was assigned.
Poor
The restating of the question and answer was not included.
Support with facts
Excellent
Student has successfully supported their answer with detailed facts. These facts may have been directly taken from a primary source. They are reliable and accurate and include the location where they were found.
Good
Student has included facts but they are vague or don't directly support their answer or no location was included where the facts were found.
Needs Improvement
The facts are partially included but they are not full detailed facts.
Poor
The answer was not supported by any facts or the facts have nothing to do with their answer.
Reflection
Excellent
Student has thought about their answer and can reflect upon it by making a detailed connection (Text to Text or World). The students connection is explained in detail and connects clearly to the answer.
Good
Student has made a connection (Text to Text or World) but it isn't explained in detail. The connection may be unclear and leaves the reader with many questions.
Needs Improvement
The reflection portion is a text to self connection or the connection was included but lacks explanation and leaves the reader with many questions.
Poor
The reflection portion has been left out. There is no attempt to a Text to text or Text to World connection.
Conclusion
Excellent
The student clearly has included a conclusion that restates the question again and summarizes their entire answer. The student ends with a final thought, quote or prediction that connects directly back to the journal question.
Good
The conclusion has been included but may be missing one of the required elements from excellent column.
Needs Improvement
The conclusion is either missing or is missing 50% of required elements or their conclusion does not connect back to the assigned question.
Poor
The conclusion to the answer has been omitted.
Conventions
Excellent
Student has included vivid and transition words to help guide the reader through their answer. There are no spelling mistakes and capitalization has been used correctly throughout.
Good
Student has included some vivid words but they may be used incorrectly and transition phrases have been used to connect one thought to the next. There are no more than 3 errors in spelling and capitalization.
Needs Improvement
Transition phrases are missing or not used correctly. Student has not made an attempt to use vivid words to help bring writing alive. There are 3-6 spelling or capitalization errors.
Poor
There are 7 or more errors in spelling or capital letters.
