Main Idea and Supporting Details Main Idea and Supporting Details Students will use a graphic organizer to demonstrate knowledge of main idea and supporting details while using an expository text of "Veterans Day". The main idea and details will then be put together in a paragraph which will consist of the main idea and a summary of supporting evidence. Main Idea -Graphic Organizer	Excellent The main idea is a complete thought on the graphic organizer.	Good The main idea is on the graphic organizer. It is not a complete thought.	Poor The main idea is not correctly stated on the graphic organizer.
Supporting Details - Graphic Organi	Excellent The graphic organizer has 3 clearly written supporting details from the article. The supporting details are strong evidence of the main idea proving it true.	Good The graphic organizer has 2-3 supporting details from the article, but they may not be the most supportive evidence from the article.	Poor The graphic organizer contains 1 supporting detail, or the details included do not support the main idea.
Paragraph Summary	Excellent The main idea is clearly stated. The details support the main idea. Transition words are used to connect ideas. A conclusion is included at the end.	Good The main idea stated but the details do not all support the main idea. Transition words may or may not have been used. Evidence of conclusion.	Poor The main idea is not stated OR the details do not support the main idea. Little evidence of transition words. Unclear conclusion or no evidence of conclusion
Grammar, Usage and Mechanics	Excellent Summary is free of errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.	Good Some errors is spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Summary is still clear enough for understanding.	Poor Errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation make summary difficult to understand.
