No steady rhythm. Lots of breaks and pauses. No note was held for its full rhythmic value.

Rhythm is somewhat steady but there were a few mistakes. Some notes were not held for their full rhythmic value. For example a whole note should be held for four beats.

Good steady rhythm. There was a definite underlying pulse and each note was held for its full rhythmic value. The eighth notes were twice as fast as the quarter notes and long notes were held for the correct number of beats.

Many squeaks or harsh tones. Student was blowing too hard or fingers were not placed firmly and completely on the holes.

Some notes squeaked or the tone was harsh. Student may need to open the throat on the lower notes or check finger placement.

A soft, sweet sound on the higher notes and a warm, gentle sound on the lower notes was heard.

Fair

No phrasing. Each note was played as an individual note, with a "choppy" sound. It appeared that a breath was being taken after every note. Tonguing was not heard, only fingers moving.

Breath control was good. Some notes were not tongued.

Good phrasing. Breaths were taken at the end of a phrase and every note was tongued clearly.
