Word Choice
Level 1

Sentence Structure
Level 1
Sentence structure is basic and short. Sentences are choppy and there is no flow to the words. Your work shows that more effort and help is required.
Level 2
Sentences have an adequate structure. There is some fluency and flow is irregular, but effort is shown in writing. Sentences are mainly short and choppy with few of them being longer.
Level 3
Sentences are structured well with good connecting words. Your sentences are fluent with good flow. Your sentences are not short and choppy. There is a good mix of short and long sentences that make sense.
Level 4
Sentences are structured very well with solid connecting words. Your sentences are fluent with excellent flow. Sentences are mainly longer with minimal shorter ones. Your sentences show your ability to think at a level beyond your grade.
Spelling/Grammar
Level 1
Spelling and grammar is basic with little effort used. Meaning is altered by the lack of proper punctuation. Capitals and periods are almost never used.
Level 2
Spelling and grammar are adequate with some errors that may affect meaning slightly. Capitals and periods are mostly used and usually in the correct spot.
Level 3
Spelling and grammar are done well with a few incidental errors that do not affect meaning. Capitals and periods are used correctly and in appropriate spots.
Level 4
Spelling and grammar are excellent with almost no errors. Your use of comma's, colon's and quotation marks are correct and in proper place. Work shows your ability to think at a level beyond your grade.
Format
Level 1
You have random sentences with very little flow. Your topic sentence doesn't address your ideas and there is very little flow to your written work. It is difficult to understand your main ideas.
Level 2
You have used a paragraph format with mostly complete sentences. You have a topic sentence and concluding sentence and some of your work makes sense and has flow.
Level 3
You have used a paragraph format with many well connected sentences that make sense. Your topic sentence contains your 2 or 3 main ideas briefly and then following sentences describe your ideas in greater detail which includes your support from the text.
Level 4
You have used an essay format in which each of the following headings are address in their own individual paragraphs: intro, 1st idea, 2nd idea, 3rd idea (grade 7), and conclusion.
